I have one of the (big name) AQ2A conversions that has been my “holy grail” amp for a few years now, but the growl and gain on the 385 is just unreal - I feel like it gives me everything I wanted and then some. -PE
My Model 2 permanently sits on my desk running into my Universal Audio OX. Best amp I’ve ever owned. Tons of texture and dimension. -BC
I like the two you built for me a lot… made me okay with selling my old Fender and Vox amps.-DR
The AMPSAMPS Model 2. This is the amp for you if you want a daily driver that sounds and feels like a vintage amp but without the price tag or concern for vintage-amp preservation. Many tweed amps break up too early. I aim for clean headroom and clarity for the first 40-50% of the volume dial followed by breakup and compression at full volume - no mud. There is a wide range on the tone control that adds a little bit of extra oomph and sparkle as you turn it up, and at 10-12 watts, it’s perfect for at-home playing, recording or small club gigs.
The Model 2 is my homage to American tweed amps from the 50’s, and is built with new components using point-to-point wiring on terminal strips, reusing the original transformers from the Filmosound amplifier. With all of my amps, my goal is to get the signal from your fingers to the speaker the shortest route possible so as to capture all of the dynamics of your playing for an interactive experience between you and the amp.
Tube Lineup 5879, 12AX7, 6V6GTx2, 5Y3 Rectifier. 12w output, 8 & 16 ohm speaker jacks.
What Customers Say:
“Sounds great! My buddy has a few Filmosound conversions done by notable builders and I think yours sounds better than all of them. The clarity and headroom on the first half of the volume dial is really nice and the tone knob has a really wide range for different guitars and cabs. Well done brother - thanks so much.” -C.W.
“Hey man, just wanted to let you know the amp arrived safe and sound this afternoon. I’ve only had about 15 minutes with it, but good lord… this thing absolutely rips! I have one of the (big name) AQ2A conversions that has been my “holy grail” amp for a few years now, but the growl and gain on the 385 is just unreal - I feel like it gives me everything I wanted and then some. Thank you again for the awesome addition and for keeping your prices so reasonable. Truly an 11/10. Looking forward to bringing it to a session next week! -P.E.
“Outstanding conversion and re-wire - puts out great vintage tone… Bill knows what he’s doing. It is extremely responsive and he couldn’t have been more helpful and generous with his time. Highly recommended! -DH
“My amp arrived this afternoon - woohoo! It sounds glorious. Really impressed with the tonal range and the simplicity. Very cool. Thanks man! Man, those transformers are massive! Anyway, super pleased how it came out. It is a great base tone and power level for most of what I would ever do. I think it’ll pair well with some of my other amps when I want to do a stereo thing, because it’s got its own personality. Love it with both controls right around noon… perfect amount of grit just starting to come in there. Well done, man! Thanks!! -BH
“Duuuuuuude… it’s reaallllly nice. There’s a common feel with the phase inverter and power stage but the two preamps give a lot of latitude, plus the negative feedback control… man, having fun. Looking forward to a couple hours with it this weekend. Ran it into 2x10 alnicos, 2x12 Bandmaster cab with Oxfords, 2x12 Epiphone cab with Scumbacks. And… for something that’s 70+ years on some parts, it’s quiet and doesn’t snap crackle pop! The 5879 has some meaty poise to it, and the 6J7 just wants to rip…” -S.D .
“Billy… this amp is blowing my mind. I have never heard an amp sing until now. There is a level of clarity between the notes that makes it sound like each note is singing. Every note stands out in a chord. I don’t even want to plug any pedals into it. I’m stunned… It’s absolutely brilliant. Thanks Buddy!” -Cody
